Separate Blog Entries for Images

Preparing to migrate my big giant Domestik Goddess blog from Wordpress to Majestic, I've been trying to think everything out in advance - how I want to change the way I've been structuring the blog so far, and so on , based on how I see it developing in the future...

One thing I'm not sure how to handle - that's the images I've uploaded to illustrate the posts.

You know how all the images get their own page when brought in from WP, as well as appearing in the posts? WP does the same thing (makes a page for each image) but those pages are "hidden" unless the blogger specifically links to them when placing the thumbnail.

Sometimes I like to use that separate image page - when there's more to say about the image, for example; but sometimes I don't need it and would rather not have it shown.

At present (on the DG-Majestic test site) all the image pages are shown on the page just as if they were separate posts. I'd rather have it so that they're "one layer back," so to speak - so that those image pages can be accessed by readers if I link to them from the relevant post,  but aren't given the same prominence as the post pages.

Don't know if you can make any sense of my question - and maybe I'm just missing something totally obvious - but thought I'd toss it out there, anyway!  The whole question of how best to handle images is a tricky one, actually. A photo blog or photo tutorial - no issue. But when the images are generally just used as illustration, how might that be handled?

Oh - I should say that I'd rather not stash the images on photobucket or flickr or such; experience tells me its best to keep the whole blog package in one piece, in one place.

Hi Jen,

I have updated the migration script so all of the images will be created as files rather than posts. These will appear on the Site Files screen in the AdminCP. All of the original links are intact - they refer to /wp-content/uploads/.

I also had to update the download and upload scripts so they can handle links to external files. I have tested that the files can be accessed via file_download.php (which is how you link to files) and that editing the files will not corrupt the URL. However, I haven't got thumbnails to work yet, which means you get a few errors when editing the files.

We're actually planning to remove file areas - i.e. public areas of your site that are specifically for file uploads - once article attachments include all of the functionality we've got for file areas. With article attachments, you can either attach a file to some of your posts and use the thumbnails within the post, or create a separate section with attachments that can be linked from other articles. You can also upload to Site Files, which prevents the files from being "browseable" with a title and description, but you can still link to them.

The migration script changes will be in 1.5.7. I can upload the latest migration of your WordPress site to your Majestic test site, although it is probably safer to upload once you're running the new version. Otherwise, the URLs will be corrupted if you edit any of the files. Let me know if you want to see the latest migration now or if you'd be happy to wait for 1.5.7 (which will hopefully be landing next weekend).

As you can tell, Ben, waiting is not a problem for me - getting time to complete my new template design so I can finally make the formal migration, that's the big hold-up on my end. Sounds like the photo/file thing you've got worked out is just the ticket, just what I want/need. This is a long weekend here in Canada, so I'm hoping to be able to make some real progress on this - will keep you posted!

Afterthought: I might just hack together a temporary template that's more or less like the existing one, instead of the lovely new look I've got planned, so as to get this migration moving along...

OK, Jen - thanks for the update. Meanwhile, we are on track to release 1.5.7 sometime tomorrow (Sunday). I can upgrade your test site when 1.5.7 is released, but I'll need to reimport the migrated site - which is likely to erase the database. Could you let me know when you're done with the templates, please? Make sure you export any of the templates you change (site, area, page, comment) - you'll be able to import them when the import is complete.

Thanks, Ben! I've been doing my template fiddling over at my other not-yet-public domain, so no template changes on the test site need to be preserved. You may have your way with it! :)

1.5.7 has been released and your site has been upgraded.

I did a partial upload of the database to preserve the changes you've done so far. I redid the WordPress migration and you should now see your images under AdminCP - Site Files. Hope this helps!
